How are parents/guardians notified about sexual health education instruction?
Parents must be notified each school year by the building principal of the intent to have a sexual health education unit at that grade level, and be given the opportunity to decide whether their student will or will not participate in such instruction. Parents will also be notified of the opportunity to preview the materials and methods of instruction prior to making a decision regarding their child's participation.
Teachers must also inform parents in writing again before the sexual health education curriculum is taught in the classroom. This may be done through the school or classroom newsletter, or by email.
What is the parent preview policy?
Parents need to have an opportunity to preview the materials and methods of instruction prior to making a decision regarding their child's participation. This must be done prior to the materials being taught. Please visit www.okemosk12.net to preview the topics taught at each grade level.
What if a parent wants to sit in on the class?
According to Board of Education Regulation R6141.11, parents have a right to observe sexual health education classes. Please refer to the Regulation: Sexual Health Education - Classroom Observation Guidelines.
